DEREK CASTIGLIONI

‘Show me your garden and I’ll tell you who you are.’

Hailing from a family of landscapers, Milan based Derek Castiglioni, who defines himself as an outdoor space designer, employs a multidisciplinary approach in his practice. Castiglioni works across event design and set-ups, residential and commercial landscape projects, as well furniture and textile design.

After completing a BA in Architecture from Politecnico University in Milan, Castiglioni moved to Australia to expand his knowledge of urban design at UWA in Perth. Upon returning to Italy he dedicated his time to further developing the family business and has since been making his own mark.

Castiglioni designs by combining an architectural sensibility with the idea that there is no distinction in interpreting the outer spaces from the internal ones. Behind his projects, there is careful research on sustainability, flexibility and study of compositions. His approach, now endeared by the design scene, has seen him collaborate with important fashion houses including Alexander McQueen, Dsquared2 and Stella McCartney for special projects where his exuberant plantings have been sought. Castiglioni also collaborates with several important architecture and design studios in Italy and abroad.

His furniture, a garden-ready collection of chairs, tables, chaise lounges and planters made with precious materials and original prints, hark back to the mid 20th century. They are works of art, entrenched by the balance of retro taste and sophistication. Castiglioni’s furnishing editions are too important to be defined by any one space. Translating to different environments they are a testament to the designers philosophy.
