FRATELLI LEVAGGI

“... a miracle of technique and elegance!”

The passion shared by three generations of Fratelli Levaggi is pure and simple: shaping wood with their own hands. Young creativity is channelled by the experience and knowledge of the elders, who guide the process from the selection and cutting of the tree to the assembling and painting of individual components. They work with a variety of woods that are part of the time-honoured Chiavari chair tradition and leave very few steps of the process up to modern machinery, favouring a human assessment and manual approach to ensure the highest quality.

The Chiavari chair is an extraordinary invention of 1807, thanks to the great creative genius of local cabinetmaker Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi. The chair was a success immediately and soon many factories opened in Chiavari and surrounding towns in the Liguria region of Italy to produce the chair. It is a style, with its with it lightness and structure, that has continued to inspire contemporary design for more than two centuries.

Since 1963, Fratelli Leavggi preserve the tradition, building authentic artisan Chiavari chairs using only traditional methods and materials, but constantly focusing on researching and experimenting with new ideas and designs.

Gabriele and Paolo, the latest generation of the Levaggi family to take over the reins, have given the company a new burst of energy and creativity, and are steering it into the future with a sure hand.
